What to do when your Air Conditioner stops working

Humorous icture of a sweaty guy holdin an air circulating fan

So...it’s the middle of Summer...in Houston...112º outside...
98% humidity...and your AC QUITS WORKING!

First, Don’t Panic! One of our NATE certified technicians is just a phone call away. But, before you call, there are a few things you can try doing yourself:

Make sure that the unit is not turned off at the thermostat

Okay, so that’s pretty obvious. But, on occasion, we do get a call to check out a broken AC and it’s as simple switching it back on. Oh, and make sure it's set to "cool" (that happens too).

Check Your Fuse Box or Breaker Box

Even if the lights and other electrical appliances in your home are working, the circuit that your AC unit is on may not be. If you have a breaker box, check to see if any of the switches are in the “off” position. If any are, switch them back on and see if your AC begins working. If you have a fuse box, replace any fuses where the fuse wire appears to have burned through and see if your AC begins working. If your Air Conditioner unit does come back on after resetting the breaker box or replacing the fuse, then problem solved. However, if you find that the fuses or breakers are repeatedly failing it most likely indicates a more serious problem and you should have your Air Conditioning System inspected by a professional.

Check Your AC Unit’s Power Switch

Believe or not, it’s not uncommon for us to called to a home where the Air Conditioner has stopped working and the problem is that the unit has simply been switched off. Somewhere near your main indoor AC unit there will be a switch that looks identical to a regular light switch. It’s not unheard of for someone to unknowingly switch off the AC thinking that they’re turning out the lights. If you have trouble locating the switch, try following the electrical wires leading from you main AC unit.

Check Your Filters

If your air filters are extremely dirty the airflow through your system can be diminished to the point that you Air Conditioning system can no longer cool properly. Replace your filters if they appear dirty. You should change your filters a least once a month.

Check for Ice Buildup Around the Hoses Leading from the Outside Condenser Unit into the House

A variety of problems, such as low Freon levels, can cause your Air Conditioner to “Freeze Up”. Shut your system off for a few hours to allow it to thaw. Your AC may begin working again after it has thawed out but it could be a sign of potentially serious problems. It’s important that you have the system inspected as soon as possible to prevent any damage to your AC systems components.
