Your clothes dryer dries your clothes with warm air heated either by gas or by electricity. The hot air is vented to the outside of your home through an exhaust duct. Over time, lint from clothing will build up inside the exhaust duct restricting or even blocking the air flow. When this happens you may notice that your clothes are taking longer to dry. Not only will this drive your utility bills up but it can be a serious safety hazard as well. According to a January 2007 Department of Homeland Security report (PDF 684KB), “Annually, 12,700 clothes dryer fires occur in residential buildings resulting in 15 deaths and 300 injuries. ‘Failure to clean’ is the leading factor contributing to clothes dryer fires in residential buildings.” Having your clothes dryer exhaust vent cleaned at least once a year will reduce the risk of fire and allow you dryer to dry clothes more efficiently and help to save you money on your energy bills.
